On 30 September 2021, the “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” daily published an article by attorney-at-law Jacek Sobczak entitled “Vocational higher schools for doctors? Is it (not) a joke?”.
The bill to amend the Higher Education and Science Act and certain other acts (print No. 1569), which is to be submitted to the Sejm (the Polish Parliament) this Friday, stems from the intention to expand the circle of schools entitled to apply for an authorization to establish degree programmes in medicine and dentistry. It refers to such vocational higher schools, which already provide education preparing for practicing a medical profession (nursing, midwifery, medical rescue, physiotherapy) and have an academic category in the discipline of medical sciences or in the discipline of health sciences. According to the drafters, allowing vocational higher schools to apply for an authorization to establish medical and dental faculties is expected to increase the number of students, and consequently graduates, in a situation of growing demand for physicians in the medical care system. But will this happen?
